  • I came here to listen to the original version of the song sang by Jeff Buckley. With all due respect, but for me in the JB’s version has more space. Besides, the guitar version suits me better.

  • I've learned that love knows nothing of time. I've consumed my days with a woman who defies destiny. What better way to defy my own?

  • Truly one of the most devastating songs. Nina has a way of making a song truly beautiful and haunting at the same time

  • Ich habe diesen gewaltigen Song das 1. mal von Katie Melua gehört und war zu Tränen gerührt! Aber Nina..? Ihre Stimme ist pure EMOTION! Danke, Nina!!!!!!!

  • I lost myself on a cool damp night
I gave myself in that misty light
Was hypnotized by a strange delight
    Under a lilac tree

I made wine from the lilac tree
Put my heart in its recipe
It makes me see what I want to see
And be what I want to be

When I think more than I want to think
I do things I never should do
I drink much more that I ought to drink
Because it brings me back you

Lilac wine is sweet and heady, like my love
Lilac wine, I feel unsteady, like my love
Listen to me, I cannot see clearly
Isn't that she, coming to me nearly here?

Lilac wine is sweet and heady where's my love?
Lilac wine, I feel unsteady, where's my love?
Listen to me, why is everything so hazy?
Isn't that he, or am I just going crazy, dear?

Lilac wine, I feel unready for my love
    Feel unready for my love

  • One of Nina's best. Piano adds the necessary drama and Nina's voice is filled with sincere pain. Great performance. I don't hear this in any of the female vocalists today.

  • I love Nina Simone and Eartha Kitt – but I must say I prefer Simone's version overall.

For my money, the best and ultimate version of this song is Jeff Buckley's – hands down.  He nails it.  Young as he was, he was a very old soul.  RIP.

It was nice to see Miley Cyrus give a try, as it shows she has either decent taste or listens to decent advice, but she doesn't yet have the substance – she's still too young to really pull it off convincingly.  She doesn't fully understand the song and it shows.
