Good day, my listeners. This will be the final episode on this series of teachings titled
CHRISTIANITY BIBLE AND ALCOHOL. I have, by God’s grace, expounded on what
Bible’s take is on the issue of alcohol consumption, and the fact that alcoholism which is a sin
is not synonymous with alcohol; just as sex is not with sexual addiction or food with
food addiction. Pushing modesty: drinking not in excess, the Bible’s stance on alcohol
consumption extra miles: prohibition, or an outright ban, and enforcing it as Christian
doctrine is itself sinful. We should stop where the Bible stops. And not try improving
on God’s word. A servant of God could take an uncommon stance
based on personal revelation; as long as it doesn’t go against a clear biblical instruction,
God is ok with it. The Father of the Rechabites clan did so in Jeremiah 35:14, God even made
a provision for such in Israel, that if anyone in himself vows to be a Nazarite for some
time is allowed. Numbers Chapter 6. Paul similarly said the same on food and drink; he said in
Romans 14: verses 13, 14, 17, and 20 to 21. Let us not therefore judge one another any
more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in
his brother’s way. I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean
of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. For the
kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy
Ghost. For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil
for that man who eateth with offence. It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine,
nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak – Drinking alcohol is never a sin, but as Paul
exhorted abstention from alcohol, or any other thing is advice; if it might hurt the sensibility
of others, not because it is sinful to drink. He exhorted Timothy to use alcoholic wine
Oy-nos, which is equivalent to the Old Testament alcoholic Yahyin, like medicine. Alcohol was
used in ancient times for various medicinal purposes. Two of such instances is in the
story of good Samaritan, Luke 10:34, and Paul’s advice here in 1 Timothy 5:23. to Timothy
to use wine as medicine for its curative property. It is a fact that Oy-nos the New Testament
word for wine is generic: it could mean either the Old Testament non-alcoholic Teerosh or
alcoholic Yayhin. But by cross-referencing it with the cited Old Testament text if any,
or from the context in which it is used we could deduce, if the particular wine in question
is alcoholic, or not. It is also a known fact that when someone makes up his or her mind
on what to believe, facts or truth doesn’t matter to him or her. Such is the case with
John Chapter 2. Does it make any sense for someone to suppose that the Governor of the
feast meant someone might, or could get drunk on grape juice?. This same could also be said
about all the epistles urging Christians to not get drunk on wine, drink wine to excess,
or drink too much wine. Some would still argue that they were urged not to get drunk on,
or drink grape juice to excess. What sort of drink was used in the bible for
Lord’s supper on its institution? The bible is not explicit enough on the kind of the
wine used, it simply called it – the fruit of the vine, which could mean either non-alcoholic
grape juice or alcoholic wine, as Yahyin (Alcoholic wine) is also indirectly a product of the
Vine. Jeremiah 48:33. But we can get a clue from other Bible references, Church history,
or from Orthodox Jewish culture. The very fact that Paul reprimanded some Corinthians
for drinking the wine used in Lord’s supper to excess, and got drunk on it proves the
nature of the drink. Note: Paul did not condemn the drink but excess drinking, eating, and
their disorderliness in the conduct of Lord’s supper.
Only one scripture inferred drinking of grape juice in the Old Testament; Isaiah 16:10.
others similar scriptures that pronounced God’s judgement on Fruits of the ground used
Yahyin, instead of Tyroosh, because of the word: Drink which normally goes with Yahyin.
Amos 9:14, and Chapter 5 verse 11. Zaphanniah 1:13. 1st Corinthians Chapter 11:20 to 21:
When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper. For
in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another
is drunken. The word drunken here is methoo – to drink to intoxication, get drunk, and
